Storyteller - a reading & listening app for learning English
Last updated: 1st August 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Storyteller ("the App", "we", "us") collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. Storyteller is built for reading and listening to stories, with an on-device dictionary and English-learning tools. Most content and learning features run entirely on your device.
| Category | What it is | When it's collected |
|---|---|---|
| Anonymous account identifier | A random ID (Firebase Authentication, anonymous sign-in). No email, password, name, or other personal identifier is collected in the current version of the app. | When you open Account & choose to continue without an account, or use "Sync now". |
| Synced learning data | If you tap "Sync now": your saved vocabulary words, reading progress, playlists (including Favorites), quiz history, reading/app settings (font size, theme, UI language), learning stats (streaks, daily activity), and badges earned. | Only when you manually trigger "Sync now" from the Account or My Progress screen. Sync is never automatic. |
| Crash & diagnostic data | Automatically collected crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics) - stack traces, device model, OS version, app version. No message you typed or word you looked up is included. | Automatically, if the app crashes or hits an error, on mobile builds only. |
| Analytics data | Aggregate usage data (Firebase Analytics) - screens viewed, feature usage, session length, device/locale info, and an app-instance identifier. | Automatically, during normal use. |
If you use the flashcard "record & compare" pronunciation feature, the app requests microphone access to record your voice for local playback only. This recording is never uploaded or transmitted anywhere - it stays on your device and is discarded when you're done practicing.
The current version of the app does not show advertisements. If ads are enabled in a future update, this policy will be updated first, and any ad network used (AppLovin MAX mediation) will be disclosed here along with its own data practices.
Synced data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore (Firebase), scoped so that each account can only read and write its own data - enforced by server-side security rules, not just app-side checks. Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). Data not explicitly synced (e.g. downloaded audio files, download preferences, local notification settings) stays only on your device.
We use the following service providers, each acting as a data processor on our behalf:
Synced data is retained until you request deletion (see below) or until your anonymous account is inactive for an extended period, at which point it may be periodically purged. Crash and analytics data is retained per Firebase's standard retention windows.
Storyteller is not directed at children under 13 and is not part of Google Play's Designed for Families program. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us using the details below and we will delete it.
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves (for example, if we add email sign-in, advertising, or purchases). We will update the "Last updated" date above when changes are made. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
